He had over 30 years of experience working with children, adolescents, couples, and families. Dr. Johnston's experience with trauma included working in an inpatient psychiatric unit during the Vietnam war, organizing a combat stress unit during Desert Storm, and over 15 years of working with traumatized children in the Mikan programs. Dr. Johnston completed his Master's degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy at University of Wisconsin-Stout and in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing at the University of Texas-San Antonio. His doctorate in Clinical Psychology was earned at the Union Institute. Dr. Johnston was a licensed Psychologist, Marriage and Family Therapist, and Nurse. He was also a retired Associate Professor for the University of Wisconsin, Eau Claire, and a retired Lieutenant Colonel for the United States Army Reserve.
